SKATE IN PLACE
This is the only time and the only circumstance in which we ask everyone to stay home and do not go to the skatepark. It feels crazy to type it, but the truth is, this is an unprecedented and worldwide health crisis, and we each need to do our part to maintain proper social distancing and avoid injury or other illness that would require medical attention. If we do this right, we’ll get through it, and be clear to return to the skatepark and be together sooner rather than later. Some of you have shared some creative ways to safely skate or use your skateboards at home. Let’s use this time to appreciate what our local skatepark means to us, or to do the work we can do if we’re working on a local skatepark effort.
STAY HOME

KEEPING US CONNECTED
THF staff may be working from home, but we continue to connect with communities and assist their local skatepark efforts. This global health crisis is no exception, and in fact THF has doubled our efforts to support our constituent communities and host online meetings to bring them together, share their stories, and help one-another with solutions to their current challenges.

THF AWARDS SKATEPARK GRANTS
Amidst a worldwide pandemic, THF announces nine new skatepark grants to assist projects from Oregon to Georgia meet their funding goals. When this crisis passes, skateparks will reopen and the communities that don’t have them will recognize how important it is to provide youth the opportunity to be active and healthy. Skateparks are the perfect antidote to quarantine, when conditions permit, and THF continues to work through the current crisis to support skatepark efforts across the country.

Giving True Meaning to the Words "Skatepark Champion"

Hi Dr. Cheatham,

So wonderful to hear back from you, I’m glad your spirits are high and your interest hasn’t diminished. Like you, we were all looking forward to seeing skateboarding finally make its debut in the Olympics this year but know its what’s best given the health and safety of everyone involved. That said, it gives us another year to really ramp up and, as you said, enhance involvement.

You may have already heard but just in case, I’m attaching a study on skateboarding culture that USC conducted in partnership with THF (attached). We are delighted with the overwhelmingly positive discoveries even though for those of us already immersed in the culture, the findings weren’t all that surprising. That said, the results are incredibly validating as we continue to pursue our mission of seeing more quality public skateparks built in the communities that need them the most.

Neftalie Williams, an Adjunct Professor at USC, was an integral piece of the study and maybe someone you could try to connect with to discuss skateboarding, specifically in communities of color. Tell him you are a THF Skatepark Champion, I’m sure he would be more than excited to chat with you to discuss ways to enhance involvement and participation in urban areas.

And, of course, I’m always around if you’d like to chat, as well. Thanks again for your continued support and for your unwavering commitment to skateboarding and the work we’re doing here at the Foundation.

All our best,
Angela
